TIME TO BE BOLD

Since 2021, our client Crop Trust has led the BOLD (Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods and Development) project. This global program strengthens food and nutritional security by conserving and promoting crop diversity.

We’ve backed them in three creative sprints to show BOLD’s depth and drive:

  1. Motion designs
  2. Illustrations
  3. A digital platform

1. Motion design

Did you know that barley has been cultivated for over 10,000 years (Gladiators ate it before Colosseum fights) ? or that more than 40,000 potato varieties exist? Or that the square pea can become toxic if you eat too much of it? Well…now you know.

For this first project within the BOLD program , EPIC worked on seven videos. Each of them spotlighting a specific crop that keeps the world fed. Each video is meant to be easily-watched with a simple, lively, and educational format. The format itself stays steady across all presented crops: a fun fact, the crop’s challenges, Crop Trust action, and a hopeful close.

Each crop is presented as a superhero with a unique superpower , and as their own color palette inspired by its natural color. A vibrant, inclusive palette that celebrates diversity over differences.

2. The illustrations

The Crop Trust calls them “Opportunity crops”: they are under-utilized plants that can boost food security, nutrition, and sustainability. These overlooked plants deliver nutritional, medicinal, and environmental gains and fortify biodiversity and climate resilience.

To explain to a large audience what these super crops can bring to the table (pun intended), each crop gets a combo of three illustrations: a portrait, a scene of farmers growing and harvesting it worldwide, and a one-line takeaway on why/how it feeds the future.

Of course, we matched the style of the videos for tight visual and narrative consistency.

3. The digital platform

Last but not least. A complete digital plateform!

We built on the brand image set in stages one and two to work on a a tool that lets Crop Trust teams teach the project to many and diverse audiences.

Our plan: demystifying complex concepts, (a lot of) content crafting & structuring , a touch of UX and of course some gamification.

The project deserves way more than juste a few lines here, so we actually made a whole case study about it: https://www.epic.net/fr/projet/crop-trust-bold/
